SELF Project (2006 - 2008)

Description

The SELF - Science, Education and Learning in Freedom - Project was a research and development project to develop an online platform for the collaborative production of educational materials. SELF was started with funding from the European Commission, from July 2006 till July 2008, and has been continued by various partners and active users as a community project. The main results of the project include a blue print of such a platform along with a prototype, the necessary policies for licensing, the use of free software and open standards and an initial set of educational materials. All these results have been reused by other projects and are evolving further.

Free Technology Academy (2008 - )

Description

The Free Technology Academy (FTA) is a joint initiative from several educational institutions in various countries. It aims to contribute to a society that permits all users to study, participate and build upon existing knowledge without restrictions. The FTA offers an online master level programme with course modules about Free Technologies. These courses are taught completely online in a virtual campus based on the Campus Project interoperability framework.

The FTA is a collaboration between the Free Knowledge Institute and two European universities: the Open University of Catalonia (Spain) and the Open University of the Netherlands. The Associate Partner Network adds to the founding base with a widespread network of organisations that share a common interest in offering courses in the area of Free Technology.

The Free Knowledge Institute (FKI) is a non-profit organisation that fosters the free exchange of knowledge in all areas of society. It starts from the conviction that knowledge should be accessible and reusable without restrictions. Inspired by the Free Software movement, the FKI promotes freedom of use, modification, copying and distribution of knowledge.

The FKI develops projects in four different but highly related fields: education, information technology, culture and science. Its multidisciplinary nature enables the seamless flow of information and expertise between different fields through global and transversal actions
